Description

Requirements:

  • 1200-1500 words (4-5 pages)  (Reminder: the word count applies to the body of the paper, not the header, heading, title, or the works cited page)
  • At least one reference from class readings (explanation of an argument from one of the PDFS assigned during weeks 7 and 8 and application of that argument in your analysis, use of parenthetical citations, and a works cited list at the end of the essay).  In addition (not in place of), you may also include a source you used for Journal 4 or 5 in the same way—as support for the analysis of your ad(s) or photo(s).
  • Typed MLA style

Assignment: Write a detailed analytical argument about an advertisement or documentary photo based on your own insights and at least one assertion from the assigned readings.  Briefly explain what the advertisement or photo is selling (literally or figuratively) and to whom, but focus most of your paper on how the item sells its message to that group. What strategies does it use to convey its message? You will need to consider both the images and the words used in detail.

In a visual analysis, it is crucial to use clear, precise, and detailed description so that your audience (who may or may not have the ad or photo in front of them) will be able to follow your argument. While you may want to describe the overall appearance of the ad in the opening of the paper, I'd encourage you to mix description with analysis as you deal with the more specific aspects of the ad or photo.

Your essay should clearly explain

  • The context of the visual, its target audience, and the appeal this ad would have for this particular audience.
  • The strategies used in designing the layout, composing the print copy, and making and displaying the art and photographs. The overall focus, of course, is on the meaning of this visual.
  • What cultural myths or values does it employ or reflect? Why should this matter to your audience (students and professors at Miracosta)? What does this artifact tell us about the culture in which it appears?

NB: You may choose to write about two ads or photos rather than one. This approach could lead you to an even richer and more meaningful essay. If you choose to analyze two ads or photos, make sure that they are related in some way. They could represent two different strategies used to promote a similar product or they could represent the same product, but be designed to appeal to two different target audiences.  In the case of documentary photos, they may portray the same event or issue, but in different contexts and/or for different audiences.  Whatever your approach, be sure to attach copies of your advertisement(s) or photograph(s) to your paper when you turn it in.
