Although there are a number of theories to explain the onset and development of stuttering, there has yet to be a definitive cause. Chapter 7 of Introduction to Communication Disorders reviews the successes of treatment of stuttering when initiated in early childhood. Whether the cause is organic, behavioral, or psychological, stuttering is a disabling condition that can affect school performance in children and job performance in adults. Some jobs require a great deal of speaking, while others do not. What types of jobs might a person with a stuttering disorder try to avoid? Do you think it is possible for a person with a stuttering disorder to successfully work in a job that requires a great deal of speaking? Explain your response.
