Historically, there has been a glamorization of Organized Crime and the criminals associated with it. For instance, even today, shows highlighting mafia families and mafia members still abound. Understanding how this love affair began before and during Prohibition and later through U.S. history provides an important insight into the difficulties that law enforcement has in gathering information to prosecute those engaged in criminal activity. In this Section, we will evaluate sociological phenomena that will explain the development of organized criminal conduct and its related typologies.

Assignment 3 Sociological Explanations
Criminologists and sociologists have offered many theories on why individuals join organized crime groups, and several more on why these groups continue to grow and spread. The most problematic for law enforcement are those theories that focus on globalization and what this did for the growth and reach of international organized groups.Activity Resources

. Main Task: Share Theoretical Explanations for the Existence of Organized Crime
Understanding the theoretical foundations for the existence of Organized Crime and its development in the United States is one of the first steps in learning how to combat its influence. For this activity, assume the role of a law enforcement professional in a small community just beginning to be encroached by an organized criminal group. You have been ask by your superiors to prepare a presentation suitable for fellow law enforcement officers that may have yet to have experiences with organized crime.
In your PowerPoint presentation, analyze the attributes and psychological make-up of organized crime members as discussed in your Section readings. If possible, support your viewpoint with local data. In addition to the attributes and psychological makeup of organized crime members, these questions will also guide your presentation:
- How has globalization affected the psychology of organized crime groups?
- How have these organizations adapted their structures as they expand internationally?
- How has globalization influenced the ability of these groups to communicate with each other?
Incorporate appropriate animations, transitions, and graphics as well as “speaker notes” for each slide. The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.
Support your presentation with at least five (5) scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.
Length: 12-15 slides (with a separate reference slide)
Notes Length: 200-350 words for each slide
