Description

When appearing before a judge and jury, law enforcement and forensic scientists must give an accurate statement of the crime scene investigation and clearly explain how evidence was processed and examined. To promote fairness and justice, there cannot be constitutional violations or ethical violations when framing prosecutorial charges against an accused. Such false accusations and reliance upon misstated evidentiary findings can result in the wrongful conviction of an innocent person.
It goes without saying that the hard work of both law enforcement and forensic scientists goes a long way to protect our society by successfully capturing and prosecuting criminals who would otherwise continue to commit deviant acts. Still, failure to adhere to professional standards or engage in questionable conduct that taints procured evidence circumvents our notion of one receiving a fair trial and thus, undermines our entire criminal justice system.

Assignment 8   Signature Assignment: Forensics in High Profile Cases

When we see high profile cases such as the OJ Simpson or Casey Anthony trials, media accounts of what really happened often sensationalize and distort the facts. Only when the investigating officers and forensic examiners take to the stand does the public discover what truly transpired and what specific results were determined by the forensic scientists.
Activity Resources

Main Task: Examine a High Profile Case to Assess the Completed Forensic Investigation and AnalysisSelect a particular crime with which you have some familiarity. For example, a high profile homicide that occurred in your state or perhaps a computer-related case where the accused is claiming the government is using inadmissible evidence. In a paper, compare and contrast the various investigative techniques applied to reconstruct events and identify the offender. In addition, include responses to the following:

  • Critique the evidence detection, collection, and documentation procedures.
  • Was the evidence obtained legally?
  • Was a search warrant necessary? Why or why not?
  • Outline the potential crime scene contamination and the chain of custody of the evidence. Include a summary of the court testimony of the forensic scientist and the expert witness.
  • Provide an overall evaluation of the investigation and explain if you would convict the offender based on the available forensic evidence.

Support your paper with at least seven (7) scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
Length: 12-15 pages not including title and reference pages
