Your objective in writing this paper is to analyze, compare, and contrast selected arguments posed by the three authors of the texts assigned for this course and draw your own con- clusions about the validity of the author’s argument or arguments.
Choosing a Topic
Choose one of the following topics:
1. The Social Contract
2. Race, Gender, and Immigrant Discrimination in the Workplace
3. Violations of Human Rights as Crimes against Humanity
Rely primarily on your texts for reference material. The bulk of your research will consist of carefully reviewing your assigned readings, but you’re also encouraged to explore additional resources, including scholarly essays and books or relevant court decisions. Take notes as you search for material and develop your thesis statement and be sure to clearly mark your notes with the source from which the material came. The following suggestions will help you get started:
n For Topic 1, begin with Greenhouse, Chapter 5, and then review what the other two authors offer on the nature of the social contract and how it has been abandoned in recent decades.
n For Topic 2, begin with Gross, Chapter 2, and review how the other two authors have covered this topic. Search your texts for discussions relevant to gender dis- crimination and discrimination against immigrant workers.
n For Topic 3, begin with Gross, Chapter 9, and review what Gross and the other two authors said about this topic.
The components of your research paper will include a cover sheet, the body of your paper, and a works cited or reference page on which you list all the sources you’ve used to write your paper. Use either MLA or APA style throughout your paper, including all formatting and citation.
The first page of your paper will be the cover sheet. On the cover sheet, provide the following information:
n The paper’s title
n Your name and student number
n The course name and number and the date
History of Labor in the United States SSC200
n Exam number (05025400) Sources
Most of your citations should come from one or more of your assigned texts. Since you’re writing a research/opinion paper, you may include your own ideas and experience, as well. You may agree or disagree with the authors, but either way you must support your argument with reliable material from your sources.
History of Labor in the United States
If you use Internet sources, they must be both appropriate and credible. Always establish a site’s academic credibility based on the qualifications of the author and the origin of the Web site, which should be a recognized academic or research institution.
In addition to a title page, use the following headings in your paper.
n Introduction n Argument
To avoid plagiarism, summarize or paraphrase what you’ve read, or use direct quotes for the material you use in your paper. All material that’s not your own must be cited, including direct quotes. Their sources must be listed on the reference page.
Remember, plagiarism is a serious offense. If any part of your paper is copied or reproduced from a source you haven’t cited, you may receive a failing grade on the paper and in some cases a failing grade for the course. See the Student Handbook for more information on plagiarism.
Type your submission, double-spaced, in a standard print font, size 12. Use a standard document format with 1-inch margins. (Do not use any fancy or cursive fonts.)
Include the following information at the top of your paper:
a. Name and complete mailing address
b. Student number
c. Course title and number (History of Labor in the United States SSC200)
d. Research project number (05025400)
Read the assignment carefully and cover your chosen topic fully. Use proper citation in either APA or MLA style.
Be specific. Limit your submission to the topic you chose and the specific issues mentioned.
Include a works-cited page in either APA or MLA style on which you list books, journals, Web sites, and all other references used in preparing the submission.
Proofread your work carefully. Check for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
