The Middle Ages or Dark Ages marked the "middle" period between the classical styles of Ancient Greece (1500 BCE - 450CE) and Rome, and the "rebirth" of those classical values in the Renaissance (1450-1600 CE). The Roman Catholic Church grew in power and became the fominant institution of the Middle Ages. The Church imposed it's values of "community" and focus on the "other-worldly" for nearly a thousand years (450-1450CE). The Renaissance marked the "emergence" of secular humanism and the new importance of "individualism". Discuss your understanding of this transition, citing important trends, styles, and composers (if known).
