You are asked to write a three page dance analysis paper of your choice. This assignment can be completed in the following ways: You can attend a live professional dance concert, rent a DVD of a performance, or view dances online.
You can choose any type of dance that interests you (i.e. ballet, African, Latin, modern, etc) but it must be a professional company performed by adults. If you are unsure if the company is professional, then ask the professor ahead of time.
The paper should include your thesis statement which is your overall reaction to and interpretation of the dance or dances. Your paper should also include supporting arguments and thick descriptions that help the reader understand the work and your response to it. The goal is to communicate to the reader a detailed picture of your experience. Use the dance data collection form as a guide to writing your paper.
If you attend a live performance or rent a DVD, select one or two pieces from the program and write your analysis. Do not attempt to write the critique on an entire concert of works or an evening length work in its entirety. In this case, select one or two section(s) of the evening length work to write about. Use your own judgment on how many works to cover for a complete 3-page analysis. Please note that the purpose of the assignment is not about whether or not you enjoyed the performance, but rather to demonstrate the analytical skills you have developed throughout the course. In addition, while you can include historical research to support your analysis, I do not want a straight history paper. The main point of the paper is to analyze the movement and to describe how all the elements fit together to either support or not support the movement.
Elements of the dance concert which you should include in the paper.
